Chert fossils

Chert is micro- or cryptocrystalline silica (SiO₂; also known as chalcedony or flint) which forms under particular chemical conditions inside soft sediments. Like concretions, they form inside soft sediments, and when they weather out, their shapes can frequently look like fossils. (Chert itself can sometimes contain well-preserved microfossils.).

The Florence Limestone Member is chiefly limestone with an abundance of chert and a minor amount of shale. The limestone is light-gray to yellowish-gray in color with nodules and layers of bluish-gray chert. Fossils include brachiopods, pelecypods, bryozoans, and fusulinids. The thickness ranges from 12 to 45 feet. Oketo Shale Member The Princeton Chert is a fossil locality in British Columbia, Canada, which comprises an anatomically preserved flora of Eocene Epoch age, with rich species abundance and diversity. It is located in exposures of the Allenby Formation on the east bank of the Similkameen River, 8.5 km (5.3 mi) south of the town of Princeton, British Columbia. [1]

Feb 20, 2022 · Fossil sponges exist because of a unique skeletal structure. Microscopic silica or calcium carbonate spicules, or interlocking spines, provided structural support. When the sponge died, the spicules clumped together and formed a silica mass. When hardened into rock the mass became a chert nodule. Rhythmically bedded cherts are observed in both pelagic marine and lacustrine deposits, but the formation mechanism in the latter remains highly uncertain. Our study of alternating chert ... ….
